CONTENT STUDY
MY GRANDMOTHER’S HOUSE is a beautiful
poem by KAMALA DAS. Here the poet shares her lost and fond memories of her
grandmother and the love she received from her and she also associates these
with the image of the deserted ancestral home where she spent her life’s
happiest days. Now after a long years she longs to go back to look through the
blind windows and bring back a handful of darkness (sad and painful memories).
Now she doesn’t get any care thus she is begging at strangers doors to get love
at least in small changes. The poem uses poetic devices like imagery, simile

Once there was a retired head master called Gopi Master his wife
passed away soon after his son’s marriage. He had a son who is a doctor, Dr.
Vineeth Gopi. He is married to another Doctor Dr. Sreelatha. They had a child
who is only 5 years old named Anirudh. Gopi Master affectionately calls him
Anikuttan. The bond between Anikuttan and master were strong. Sreelatha kept
a separate plate and glass for her father in law and also a cheap wooden bed.
His life was thus isolated within those four walls in the corner of that
house and the only relief was the Dear Anikuttan. He loved to play with his
grandpa and listen to his stories but ever his parents see this they scold
him and ask him to study. Thus the grandpa and the grandson shared their love
very secretly in that house. Thus one day Gopi Master passed away. Many
participated in the death ceremony and gave their condolence. But Master
heard only the deepest weep of the small heart. After two days Vineeth made
his father’s room clean and removed his plates and glass also that old wooden
bed. Anikuttan returned from school in a hurry and collected all those plates
and glasses back to its old positions. Vineeth told the boy to throw it away
but he didn’t obey else he said “papa if you throw it away how I should serve
you food when you become old because it is old man’s plate right..? And where
should you lie when you are old, if you remove this bed….”
Vineeth’s eyes filled with tears and he had little words for his
